< The Origin and History of Gochujang Tteokbokki >
The Fascinating Origin and History of Gochujang Tteokbokki from Sindang-dongDid you know that the history of the sweet and spicy Gochujang Tteokbokki we enjoy today is not actually that long?
Originally, during the Joseon Dynasty, the traditional tteokbokki eaten in the royal court was 'Gungjung Tteokbokki' (Royal Court Tteokbokki). It was made by stir-frying rice cakes with beef and vegetables in soy sauce instead of gochujang. At that time, rice and soy sauce were precious ingredients, so common people could not easily taste this luxury dish.
The red Gochujang Tteokbokki we know today was born in Sindang-dong, Seoul, in 1953, right after the Korean War. It first appeared in the world thanks to an accidental mistake by Grandmother Ma Bok-lim, who is now considered the godmother of tteokbokki.
At that time, Grandmother Ma attended the opening ceremony of a Chinese restaurant and accidentally dropped a piece of rice cake into a bowl of Jajangmyeon (black bean noodles). Because she did not want to waste it, she tried the rice cake covered in jajang sauce and found that it tasted surprisingly delicious. Inspired by this experience, she developed a special sauce by mixing gochujang (red chili paste) with a bit of chunjang (black bean paste). She then began selling stir-fried rice cakes over briquette fires on the streets of Sindang-dong. This was the exact beginning of the famous 'Sindang-dong Instant Gochujang Tteokbokki.'
Later, as it entered the 1970s, it gained explosive popularity as a representative street snack for ordinary people. It then developed into the sweet and spicy restaurant-style tteokbokki we eat today, using gochujang and red pepper powder as the main ingredients instead of black bean paste.
Starting from an accidental mistake, Gochujang Tteokbokki has now become South Korea's representative national snack. Knowing its history makes its spicy flavor feel even deeper and more special.
